The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) announced that Egypt’s annual inflation rate declined to 23.2% in January 2025, compared to 23.4% in December 2024. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the country reached 243.5 points, reflecting a slight decrease in inflation levels.

Key Factors Behind the Inflation Decline

According to CAPMAS, the decrease in the annual inflation rate was driven by a drop in the prices of certain essential goods. The vegetable group recorded a 2.6% decrease, while fish and seafood prices declined by 0.3%.

Additionally, the prices of several services, including organized tourism trips, various levels of education, insurance services, and telecommunication services, remained unchanged compared to the previous month.

Rising Prices in Some Sectors

Despite the overall decline in annual inflation, CAPMAS data revealed price increases in several categories. Cereals and bread rose by 1.3%, while meat and poultry recorded a 5.0% increase. Other notable price hikes included:

  • Fruits: +9.8%
  • Dairy, cheese, and eggs: +0.3%
  • Oils and fats: +0.7%
  • Sugar and confectionery: +0.7%
  • Coffee, tea, and cocoa: +1.2%

Prices in the housing sector also increased, with actual rent rising by 1.3% and housing maintenance costs going up by 0.9%.

Healthcare and Transportation Costs

The healthcare sector saw notable price hikes, with medical products, devices, and equipment increasing by 7.0%, while outpatient services rose by 0.9% and hospital services by 1.4%.

In transportation, the cost of vehicle purchases increased by 1.1%, while private and public transport services rose by 0.5%. Additionally, postal services saw a sharp increase of 17.2%.

Monthly Inflation Trends

On a monthly basis, CAPMAS reported that Egypt’s inflation rate increased by 1.6% in January 2025, compared to December 2024, which remained stable. This rise indicates continued inflationary pressures in food and service sectors, despite price stability in some other areas.
